About Canada
Canada is a vast geographic country with a population of 32,500,000 extending over 4,000 miles east to west and 2,000 miles north to south. Canada is governed by a parliamentary system with representation by population from nationally recognized geographic regions. There are 13 geopolitical regions of 10 provinces and 3 territories each having its own legislature. We are located in the province of Alberta which is the second most western province in the country. Alberta has a population in excess of 3,000,000 and is the most economically active province in the country.
Positions Available
We are currently responding to requests for housekeepers (room attendants/cleaners), food & beverage servers, line cooks, kitchen helpers and front desk agents. These opportunities are available from a variety of employers throughout the province of Alberta. We are dealing with hotels that are members of world wide franchises such as Best Western Hotels, Delta Hotels and Fairmont Hotels.
Accommodation
Accommodation in rural areas and federal parks such as Banff and Jasper are assisted by the employers. Most have a staff residence where staff rent simple accommodation for a minimal fee ranging from $200 – 300 per month. In the major cities the employers do not have a staff residence .
Salaries and benefits
Salaries and benefits are guided by the provincial labor laws and the wage survey completed by the AHLA. Employers are required to pay at least the average wage identified in the annual wage survey completed by the AHLA in order to obtain government approval to hire a foreign worker.Employees earn vacation pay at the rate of 4%, receive provincial health insurance coverage upon arrival and may be eligible for other benefits depending on employer and location. Federal and provincial taxes and benefit deductions are required as with any other Canadian employee. The total of deductions for workers in this salary range would be approximately 16% over the period of one year.
The process
The process can appear to be somewhat confusing. The employer is required to obtain permission from the Government of Canada to hire foreign workers. That process can take up to 16 weeks. Once the foreign worker is identified then an application to the Canadian Embassy is required to initiate the immigration process. The worker will be applying for a temporary work visa. The worker will be required to obtain a medical exam and security check as directed by the immigration officer. Once the work visa is approved and delivered we then make the necessary travel arrangements for the worker. We would expect that the immigration processing in the Embassy would be at least 3-4 months.
Temporary work visas
Temporary work visas issued for the workers is for one or two years at which time the worker is expected to return home and may not come back to Canada for at least 4 months. However, if the employer is extremely satisfied with the worker the employer may request that the worker stay under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). If the application is accepted by the provincial representatives the work visa is extended for another year while the individual is considered for permanent status in Canada. The PNP is dependent on the employer requesting the visa continuation. The above mentioned positions do not meet the requirement for a ‘Skilled Worker Permit’ and are only eligible for a temporary work visa.
